Assemblymember David Chiu welcomes new Assembly Fellow Samantha Huynh to the California Assembly at the year’s first floor session on January 3, 2018. The California State Assembly Fellowship Program, founded in 1957, provides an opportunity for 18 individuals to directly participate in the legislative process. The 11-month fellowship provides an introduction to public policy formation and adoption in the California Legislature through full-time work as a professional legislative staff member.

Earlier this fall Governor Brown signed a historic package of 15 housing bills that included ongoing funding for affordable housing, a $4 billion bond for the November 2018 ballot, and reforms to streamline the creation of housing. Affordable housing development funding is now at risk with the tax bill being proposed by congress.

Assemblymember David Chiu (D-San Francisco) joined the rest of the Select Committee on Health Care Delivery Systems and Universal Coverage at the State Capitol for the first in a series of hearings to be held statewide on improving access and the delivery of health care.
“I don’t think there’s a discussion about whether healthcare is a right because I think we all agree on that,” said Assemblymember Chiu. “The real question is how do we make that vision a reality, how do we make that happen.”
