Statement on Trump Administration Decision to Sue California Over Immigration Laws
(Sacramento) - Assemblymember David Chiu today issued the following statement on Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision to sue the State of California over immigration laws:
"Attorney General Sessions' publicity stunt to sue California will not deter leaders in our state from standing up for our immigrant communities. California will continue to protect our families and defend our values.
As a former prosecutor, I know sanctuary policies make us safer. When immigrants feel comfortable reporting crimes to police and testifying as witnesses in court, our communities are safer.
I was disturbed - but not surprised - to learn that Attorney General Sessions has challenged the law I authored, the Immigrant Worker Protection Act (AB 450). He would do well to remember that his duty is to uphold the Constitution, and the Immigrant Worker Protection Act simply requires that ICE agents follow the Constitution.
Make no mistake: Jeff Sessions and Donald Trump know that immigrant workers are the backbone of California’s economy, the sixth largest economy in the world. Because of their failure to enact comprehensive immigration reform, ten percent of California’s workers lack documentation. Workers who lack documentation make up one-half of our agriculture industry, one-third of our restaurant industry, and one-fifth of our construction trades. This effort by Sessions is nothing more than a deeply cynical attempt to disrupt the successful economy of a prosperous, progressive state."
