Assemblymember David Chiu statement on today’s vote in the Housing & Community Development Committee on AB 1506 to repeal Costa Hawkins
We not only have a housing crisis in California, we have a tenant crisis. While tenants across our state are suffering, it is our duty to act. That is why I became a coauthor of AB 1506, to give local jurisdictions the flexibility to provide some relief to tenants in their own communities.
While tenant bills have always been difficult to pass in the Legislature, I am disappointed that AB 1506 did not receive enough votes in committee today to advance. That outcome is disheartening, but we started a conversation in the Legislature that was long overdue.
I am committed to continuing to fight for tenants. Our work is just beginning.
