Assemblymember David Chiu Statement on Rumored ICE Raids

Thursday, January 18, 2018

Sacramento, CA—Assemblymember David Chiu (D-San Francisco) today issued the following statement on rumored ICE raids in Northern California and employer obligations under California law.

“With rumors of potential ICE raids across Northern California, it is critical that employers and workers understand their obligations and rights under California law. Last year, I authored Assembly Bill 450, which took effect on January 1, to do what we can at the state level to disrupt draconian worksite raids.

The law requires that employers request and obtain a judicial warrant from immigration officials before allowing access to a private area of a worksite. It also states that immigration authorities cannot access or review employee records without a judicial warrant or subpoena.

I appreciate Attorney General Becerra highlighting these important protections today, and I am grateful to my partners in labor who are working to ensure employers and workers are aware of this new law.

As we fight back against the anti-immigrant Trump regime, all Californians should know that state law is on their side.”
