(SACRAMENTO) – Following last month’s election, David Chiu (D-San Francisco) was sworn in today as a member of the California State Assembly to represent the 17th Assembly District, which encompasses the eastern half of San Francisco. The oath of office was administered to Chiu and his colleagues in the Assembly Chamber of the State Capitol by Associate Justice Goodwin Liu of the California Supreme Court.
“I am incredibly humbled to be elected to serve in the state Assembly and look forward to making sure that Sacramento delivers for San Francisco on the challenges of our time, from housing affordability and schools to transportation and the environment,” Chiu said. “After six years working to make San Francisco City Hall more effective by bringing all sides together to get things done, I look forward to the opportunity to doing that in our state Capitol for San Francisco and all of California.”
Assemblymember Chiu also introduced his first bill today. The bill would authorize a new $40 million annual state tax credit to assist with the rehabilitation and preservation of rental housing serving low-income tenants. Much of California’s affordable housing stock is excluded from current tax credits offered for housing rehabilitation, even though such facilities have the greatest need for refurbishment.
“With San Francisco and many parts of California experiencing intense housing affordability challenges, state government must do more to provide safe and affordable homes for our most vulnerable residents,” Chiu said. “It is particularly important that older single-room occupancy (SRO), special needs and rural housing projects initially created with public support be preserved so we can protect low-income tenants and our public investments. After six years fighting for affordable housing locally, I wanted to begin my time as a state legislator by continuing work on this important issue that impacts so many Californians.”
Today’s oath of office ceremony followed last week’s announcement from Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins of her leadership team, which included the appointment of Assemblymember Chiu to be Assistant Speaker pro Tempore. The leadership team will lead Assembly Democratic Caucus floor activities in the 2015-16 Legislative Session.
“It is an honor to be selected to join the Assembly leadership team, and I want to thank Speaker Atkins for the opportunity,” Chiu said.
