April 2016 Newsletter

Dear Friend,

It’s been a busy month in both San Francisco and Sacramento. April is the heaviest month for legislative hearings in the Capitol. Almost all of my bills, including our efforts to improve accountability for rape kit testing, increase voter registration among students, and take the Healthy Nails movement statewide, are moving forward.

But perhaps most importantly, earlier this week, I was joined by a dozen of my Assembly colleagues to unveil a plan to provide more than $1.3 billion in state funding for affordable housing programs, addressing homelessness and rental assistance to workforce housing and homeownership. I hope you’ll read more about this below.

In San Francisco in April, we had fun in the Cherry Blossom Festival, the Cesar Chavez Parade, and at various Earth Day festivities.  As always, I would love to hear from you if there are issues that we can help with - please don’t hesitate to contact my District Office!  I hope you can make it to one of the exciting events we have this month in San Francisco.

March 2016 Newsletter

Dear Friend,

This year, we held the first Assembly District 17 “There Ought to Be a Law” contest - find out who won in this newsletter!  And as spring committee hearings get going, I’m looking forward to fighting for bills that will make a real difference for Californians, tackling challenges like hunger and food insecurity to lower voter turnout and homelessness.

I also wanted to take a moment to mark a life-changing moment for my family.  On Leap Day, February 29th, my wife Candace and I welcomed our baby boy Lucas into the world.  We are blessed beyond words, and appreciate all of the well wishes that have come our way this month.

January 2016 Newsletter

Dear Friend,

The first month of the year is a time for resolutions and renewal. With that in mind, I hope you'll join me at our office's upcoming health fair. We can help you sign up for healthcare and access other services like vision and dental screenings. The first 100 families to attend will receive a free bag of groceries!

On the legislative front, we've already introduced bills to close loopholes in California's assault weapons ban (AB 1663) and to make tour buses safer (AB 1574) - see more below. As the new Chair of the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee, I am working with my office to craft a robust legislative and budget agenda for 2016 to address our housing affordability crisis. We're also working on bills to protect the environment, improve education, and ensure civil rights, among other efforts.

Keep in mind that the deadline for our "There Ought to Be a Law" program has been extended to February 12.

Please be in touch with my district office if you need assistance with state issues.  I look forward to hearing from you!

June 2015 Newsletter

Dear Friend,

Pride

Happy Pride Month! San Francisco is the thriving epicenter of the LGBTQ movement and home to one of the largest Pride parades in the country. This year’s theme is “Equality Without Exception,” and how important this theme is today. Everyone deserves equal treatment, regardless of race, gender, orientation or identity.

For this year’s parade on June 28th, I’m thrilled to partner again with the Dusty Rhino to celebrate the accomplishments of our LGBTQ community, and would be honored to have you join me at the parade and celebration following.  Please e-mail Aaron.Kahn@asm.ca.gov if you can join us.
