March 2016 Newsletter

Tuesday, March 29, 2016 - 00:00

Dear Friend,

This year, we held the first Assembly District 17 “There Ought to Be a Law” contest - find out who won in this newsletter!  And as spring committee hearings get going, I’m looking forward to fighting for bills that will make a real difference for Californians, tackling challenges like hunger and food insecurity to lower voter turnout and homelessness.

I also wanted to take a moment to mark a life-changing moment for my family.  On Leap Day, February 29th, my wife Candace and I welcomed our baby boy Lucas into the world.  We are blessed beyond words, and appreciate all of the well wishes that have come our way this month.

As always, I hope to hear from you if there are state issues that we can help with - don’t hesitate to contact my District Office!  And be sure to check out the exciting San Francisco events we have this month.

Dear Friend,

Gung hay fat choy! I enjoyed ringing in the Lunar New Year at this year's parade, and wish all of you a happy and prosperous Year of the Monkey.

The legislative season is in full swing, and I'm excited to introduce over 20 new bills this year. Below you can read more on my bill aiming to provide increased transparency around sexual assault cases (AB 1848). After hosting a hearing on homelessness with my colleagues on the Assembly Housing and Budget Committees last week, I also look forward to announcing our plans to address our state's housing crisis soon. Lastly, keep your eyes out for the winner of our "There Ought to Be a Law" contest later this week!

Please be in touch with my district office if you have state issues that we can help with - look forward to hearing from you!

Dear Friend,

The first month of the year is a time for resolutions and renewal. With that in mind, I hope you'll join me at our office's upcoming health fair. We can help you sign up for healthcare and access other services like vision and dental screenings. The first 100 families to attend will receive a free bag of groceries!

On the legislative front, we've already introduced bills to close loopholes in California's assault weapons ban (AB 1663) and to make tour buses safer (AB 1574) - see more below. As the new Chair of the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee, I am working with my office to craft a robust legislative and budget agenda for 2016 to address our housing affordability crisis. We're also working on bills to protect the environment, improve education, and ensure civil rights, among other efforts.

Keep in mind that the deadline for our "There Ought to Be a Law" program has been extended to February 12. You can learn more here.

Please be in touch with my district office if you need assistance with state issues.  I look forward to hearing from you!

Dear Friend,

I hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. With the holidays and the New Year coming up, my staff and I are researching potential legislation to pursue in the 2016 session on issues ranging from affordable housing and transportation to education and the environment.

We want your help.  Beginning this week, my office will be collecting your best legislative ideas through our “There Ought to Be a Law” program. I look forward to seeing all of your great proposals for what we can do to improve our city and our state.

Our next newsletter will arrive in your inbox in January, so I’ll take this early opportunity to pass along my best holiday wishes to you and your loved ones. I look forward to hearing from you if you have any state issues - please be in touch with my district office!

Happy holidays!

Dear Friend,

After my first legislative year in Sacramento, it is great to be back full time in San Francisco and our district!  While I was thrilled Governor Brown signed 11 of my bills, we still have much more to do, and my staff and I are working hard to make sure critical issues like affordable housing continue to be raised.

I hope to see you around town, hopefully at one of the San Francisco events described in our newsletter.  As always, if you have any state-related issues, please don’t hesitate to contact me at my district office!

Dear Friend,

After nine months of hard work, the California State Legislature just ended our 2015 legislative session, and #TeamChiu has sent thirteen bills to the Governor's desk. The Legislature has also passed legislation for Governor Brown to consider on important topics, including climate change and end-of-life options for terminally ill patients. You can read about these bills in my newsletter.

You can also find details on our upcoming District 5 Town Hall and my Latino Heritage Month Party. As always, if you have any state-related concerns, please contact my district office.

Dear Friend,

It’s been another busy month in the California State Legislature. We’re working hard to do more for public transit, find a quick solution for our high school seniors who were marginalized by poor bureaucratic decision making, take another step in the right direction with equality for all families, and make progress for our vulnerable workers in the nail salon industry. I’m excited to see how far we’ve come and energized to take on challenges in front of us.

As always, if you have any state-related issues, please contact my district office.  Hope you are enjoying the summer!

Dear Friend,

This past month, we’ve had so much to celebrate in San Francisco and California.  From celebrating love as marriage equality became the law of the land, to passing our state budget with monies coming to San Francisco for important priorities, to new policies that address critical health need, we’re moving forward in great ways.

I was also honored to recognize San Franciscans in our 17th Assembly District for extraordinary work in our community. You can read about them in this newsletter:

Dear Friend,

Happy Pride Month! San Francisco is the thriving epicenter of the LGBTQ movement and home to one of the largest Pride parades in the country. This year’s theme is “Equality Without Exception,” and how important this theme is today. Everyone deserves equal treatment, regardless of race, gender, orientation or identity.

For this year’s parade on June 28th, I’m thrilled to partner again with the Dusty Rhino to celebrate the accomplishments of our LGBTQ community, and would be honored to have you join me at the parade and celebration following.  Please e-mail Aaron.Kahn@asm.ca.gov if you can join us.

As always, if you have any state-related issues, please contact my district office at 415-557-3013.
